Make It Work

Last night I saw Tim Gunn at the Aronoff Center as part of the Smart Talk series. He was the first man to ever present and he blew me away. I have always loved him on Project Runway because he has this humble, intrinsically charming personality that has always shined on the show!

He was very candid about his career and everyone he has had the pleasure (displeasure) of collaborating with. He shared anecdotes about Anna Wintour being carried down 5 flights of stairs by her body guards because she did not want to wait for the elevator, Andre Leon Talley being hand fed grapes and cheese cubes by staff members, and about Diane von Furstenburg’s “unique” eating habits.

He also gave some great bits of advice:

  • Always take the high road, you’ll never regret it, but if it gets so high that you get a nosebleed change paths
  • The best way to get to know someone is to take them out to eat and see how they treat the wait staff. It will show a lot about their character when they are having someone service them.
  • Manners matter, there is nothing worse than being recognized for poor manners. A simple “please” and “thank you” will take you so far in life.

When speaking about Project Runway I was actually very surprised at how candid the conversation was, and how much more drama really goes on behind the scenes that gets edited out. He said the show is edited to show everyone in a very kind light and spoke about how Heidi Klum has been far from cordial on a few occasions. I was shocked that he discussed the whole Gretchen vs. Mondo fiasco, he of course thought Mondo should have won. He also cleared up the rumors that have been floating around about him not being a part of Project Runway: Allstars, he says he is just too busy with all of the filming for the other season, but wishes the designers the best of luck!

He is such an amazing person, he has accomplished so much in his life and stayed completely grounded and true to himself and his personal goals. He is witty, charming, and even more intelligent and charismatic than I thought possible. He has a lifelong fan in me and I can’t wait to see what he will be up to next (apparently a clothing line!)
